The 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R is a beast. Performance is part of the Can-Am DNA, but from the moment we blipped open the throttle we knew this machine promises a whole new level of thrills. It’s blistering fast and after a day of climbing mountains, pulling wheelies at will, and generally slinging more dirt than a tornado, we were convinced nothing compares to its raw power and performance. Let’s dive into everything we’ve discovered.
NO COMPROMISE, ALL-NEW DESIGN
Can-Am didn’t just update the 2025 Outlander 1000R, they reinvented it. It’s a radical departure from traditional big-bore ATVs and over 95% of the parts are all-new for this machine. Even their iconic trailing arm rear suspension was scrapped. It was a risky move, but it paid off in a big way with results you can feel from the seat of your pants. In fact, the entire previous chassis was reworked for this third-generation design.
Performance doesn’t begin with the engine. All the power in the world is useless if you’re bouncing down the trail on a poorly handling chassis. Can-Am engineers really knocked it out of the park with the new chassis design. Most of the chassis is built from high-strength, low alloy steel tubing, and every part was analyzed for performance optimization. It’s strong, yet doesn’t beat up the rider by being too rigid.
Can-Am’s engineers didn’t abandon their trusted trailing arm setup without thorough testing and discussion, but a beefy dual A-arm rear suspension was found to be superior. It provides consistent handling at all speeds by minimizing changes in geometry throughout the shock’s stroke. Various shock packages are offered depending on model, and sway bars at both the front and rear make a big difference as well. Can-Am uses a new, double bonded pivot bushing at all suspension pivots and sway bars. The new pivots don’t need grease fittings, they absorb vibration, and don’t squeak.

MOST POWERFUL ATV ENGINE EVER
If you want the biggest and baddest ATV on the block, this is it! With 101 horsepower, the 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R is the first and only ATV to cross the triple digit barrier. To get there required an all-new engine.
The Outlander 1000R is powered by a 999cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled V-twin engine. To coax mega-horsepower out of the engine both the intake and exhaust tracts were shaped for maximum flow, and high-compression pistons were used. Locating the engine air intake and filter directly ahead of the handlebar instrument pod both shortened the intake tract, and keeps it well above any water or mud. Heat management was also a big concern and the entire exhaust system and body panels are designed to dissipate heat to the rear. Mated to the engine is Can-Ams CVT transmission, and this too was specifically designed for maximum performance.
The Outlander 1000R features Can-Ams cutting-edge drivetrain with a pDrive primary clutch and dual-roller-driven secondary clutch. This setup delivers lightning-fast response to RPM changes, and smooth, jerk-free engagement. Back shifting was also without hesitation. All-new front and rear differentials are designed to enhance strength and long-term durability while reducing any annoying driveline noise. As with the engine air intake, the CVT air intake is also located high in the chassis to keep the clutches clean.

FIT and TRIM – EXCELLENCE IN MOTION
You have to admire the styling and quality of the 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R. It’s bold, sporty, highly refined, and is complemented by premium-quality materials. From the sleek LED lights to the thoughtfully designed composite racks and storage compartments, every detail exudes refined craftsmanship.
Nothing about the new Can-Am Outlander 1000R feels cheap or flimsy. Body panels fit excellent and are pliable enough to resist damage. They’re also sculpted to not restrict body movement, especially ahead of your knees. It feels spacious! The large floorboards provide excellent protection and drainage, while the integrated foot peg allows you to pivot your foot during aggressive riding. While the standard foot pegs are solid, upgrading to the more aggressive aluminum pegs found on the Outlander XMR could provide an even more secure grip. They’re excellent!

The Outlander’s bodywork is not only stylish but also practical. Composite racks are sculpted with flat surfaces and integrated accessory attachment points, and thanks to solid support underneath, they don’t flex when loaded. On-board storage boxes and maintenance access panels are also seamlessly blended into the bodywork. Both the CVT cover access, and the cartridge style oil filter are behind panels that pop off quickly. The panels and storage access covers fit very well and close securely, and nothing rattles around when riding.
Nothing feels like a compromise on the 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R. With its stunning appearance and premium quality feel, the 1000R is a testament to Can-Am’s commitment to excellence.

FEEL FROM THE SEAT
Even the seat of the 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R was designed for performance! It’s soft enough for comfort, but firm enough for shifting your body during aggressive riding. The Outlander 1000R’s handlebars are tailored to different riding styles. While most models feature a relaxed, backward-swept design, the XT-P and X-MR models offer a more aggressive, Pro-style fat bar that puts you in an attacking position for quick turns. The X-MR model even takes it a step further with drop-style ends, allowing you to hang off the side for maximum control in deep mud.
The 1000R’s digital display puts all the essential ride information right where you need it in an easy-to-read configuration. On the left handlebar, you’ll find controls for the starter, lights, and winch. But it’s on the right handlebar where the real magic happens. The thumb throttle housing includes buttons for the Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) with several driving modes, and Intelligent Engine Braking (iEB). Our initial concern was that feel from the electronic throttle is VERY light and would take careful, steady control. The gear shift lever easily and securely snicked the transmission into gear every time, with no jerky feedback or grinding. We wish every ATV shifted this well.

MOUNTAIN TRAIL TIME
The rugged Canadian wilderness was the perfect proving ground for the 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R. With tight trails, rivers, rocks, and towering mountains, we had everything we needed to put the sporty XT-P model to the test. With Can-Ams DESS security system in place, we hit the start button and unleashed the beast. The engine roared to life with a deep, satisfying growl. A slight flutter in the handlebars at idle was quickly dampened with a touch of throttle. We slipped the gear shifter into High and headed for the wilderness.
A thousand-cc ATV on tight trails? Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? Turns out, we were dead wrong. The 1000R danced between trees like a squirrel on crack, delivering instant thrills without sacrificing control. The suspension held its line under the most aggressive cornering, and the tires gripped like glue with no perceivable sidewall flex, even when we lowered the pressure to a setting we preferred. No doubt front and rear sway bars help keep the chassis flat as well. It was a blast to stab at the throttle, the XT-P’s massive engine delivering instant thrills without sacrificing control. We played with the Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) flipping between Work, Standard, and Sport mode, and we felt the middle ground of Standard setting was best for winding through any tight sections. Make no mistake though, in any mode this thing is a blast!
After our woodland adventure we hit the mountains. The trail turned from a gravel road to a logging road, then a narrow path, and finally, just rocks. With the iTC in SPORT mode, we launched from corner to corner, always climbing skyward. It was pure adrenaline! As the trail got gnarlier, the suspension proved its worth. Countless times we braced for a hard hit, but the shocks soaked it up, and the arched A-Arms cleared obstacles that would stop most other machines. And the DPS steering system was a lifesaver as we navigated along, acutely aware of an enormous drop at the trails edge. Even near the tree line, the power never faded thanks to the EFI system. Mountain conquered!
Descending steep slopes can often be more hazardous than the climb, but the 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R has your back. With powerful disc brakes on all four wheels and the iEB Intelligent Braking System, you’re in control. Choose from three braking modes, and the engine helps you slow down. In WORK mode, it’s like having an extra brake. It won’t stop you completely, but it’ll keep things under control.

RIDE REPORT WRAPUP
The 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R is an absolute blast! Its blistering speed and unmatched power left us in awe. It’s also predictable and confidence-inspiring. While it will launch you from corner to corner, handling is precise and it doesn’t do anything crazy. We managed a top speed of 78mph and it still had more to give when we ran out of room. Even though this is a big machine and has blown up to a staggering 975 lbs., (me too, Outy me too) it never feels close to that heavy. In fact, it feels quite sporty! More than once we found ourselves flicking our toe to shift like a sport ATV. As for the throttle being too light, our fears were unfounded. Throttle input is rewarded with instant response, but it’s never jerky. Can-Am nailed it! They’ve managed to bridge the gap of enormous power without sacrificing rideability. As a package it works very, very well.
The 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R is not just an ATV; it’s a statement. It’s not just your first ride that will be a thrill, every ride will be.
