2025 KAWASAKI RIDGE CREW – RIDE TESTING THE 6-SEAT PREMIUM UTV

2025 KAWASAKI RIDGE CREW – RIDE TESTING THE 6-SEAT PREMIUM UTV

Kawasaki has never been shy about a challenge.  Last year they crashed the premium UTV party with the launch of the Ridge, an impressive high-end UTV that combines outstanding trail-taming capability with the ability to tackle hard work, all while riding on an ultra-reliable chassis and topped with a luxury cab. The Ridge is designed for crossing sunbaked desert or mountain trails in comfort, and for carrying everything from hay bales to landscape bark with ease. But the one thing it couldn’t carry was more than three riders. Until now. The new KAWASAKI RIDGE CREW and RIDGE XR CREW deliver the Ridge experience to the whole group.

KAWASAKI RIDGE REFRESHER – THE DETAILS.

When they released the Ridge standard cab model, Kawasaki ventured deep into territory formerly occupied only by Polaris and Can-Am. The growth in high-end UTVs featuring full cabs, creature comforts like power windows, bigger engines with plenty of power, and complete HVAC systems for year-round comfort had not gone unnoticed. Kawasaki wasn’t shy about their ambitions and they delivered in a big way. The RIDGE features:

  • 999cc In-Line, 4-Cylinder engine with either 92 hp (base) or 116 hp in XR models
  • 3 Power modes, Work – Standard – Sport, allows you to select power delivery based on terrain and task
  • Kawasaki ultra-reliable CVT system with 2WD/4WD with High, Low, Neutral, Reverse
  • Expertly crafted interiors with multiple storage options, smooth inner door panels with no sharp edges, excellent, easy to read displays, and multiple 12V and USB charge options.
  • Backlit switches and dome lights that eliminate fumbling in the dark.
  • Stylish bodywork that fits well, protects from mud, water, and trail obstacles, and is pliable enough to resist damage.
  • An excellent, large capacity cargo box with accessory attachment points, and also is self-draining.
  • Well thought out maintenance access
  • Garmin GPS Option:  Standard on some RIDGE models, but wanted on all.  It’s a VERY handy tool with trail mapping, group ride capability, vehicle info, and a ton of info, including a gimble system that displays pitch and roll angles!
  • Trail Luxury:  Power windows are standard, and some models even feature front and rear cameras!
  • Windshield Wiper & Cleaner:  A great feature, and unlike other models, it actually sweeps moisture down and away thanks to its hood level mounting.  Roof mounted units lift water back up.  It even comes with a handy squirt cleaner.
  • Automotive quality glass

THE WHOLE CREW

Following up the release of the standard RIDGE with the RIDGE CREW was a home-run for Kawasaki.  It carries many of the same features, but with added seating and a few upgrades.

One thing’s for sure about any Kawasaki, be it two wheels or four: they’re built tough.  From the wheels to the roof, they’re extremely reliable and built to take a beating while delivering a supple ride.  The Ridge Crew rides on a robust steel chassis 31.5” longer than the standard Ridge, and the chassis gets extra gussets and stiffening members to accommodate the additional length and load.  The suspension is adjustable at both ends.  There is no sway bar, but even under aggressive cornering, body roll is minimal thanks to progressive shock valving.

The Ridge Crew stays true to its workhorse nature. Out back you’ll find a spacious cargo box that handles 1,000 pounds with ease. Kawasaki’s attention to detail shines, with accessory tie-down points, D-rings, tailgate cup holders, and a clever sloped floor that automatically drains.  And if you need to haul even more, the 2-inch receiver hitch and robust disc brakes confidently manage a 2,500-pound towing capacity.

RIDGE CREW ENGINE and TRANSMISSION CHANGES

The Ridge Crew echoes the standard Ridge with its 4-cylinder engine, producing 92 horsepower in the base model and a potent 116 in the XR.  Three selectable power modes—Work, Normal, and Sport—allow you to tailor the engine’s response to any terrain or task. To minimize cabin noise and control cabin temperature, the engine is isolated and heavily insulated. Both the engine and CVT draw clean, quiet air from under the front hood. But it’s the transmission, common to all Crew models, that really sets it apart with a clever upgrade.

While the Ridge utilizes Kawasaki’s proven CVT system, the CREW models benefit from a significant, feel-it-in-your-seat upgrade. Kawasaki’s ‘Free Collar’ clutch revision, essentially a roller bearing on the drive clutch shaft, maintains belt tension at idle. This translates to smoother throttle engagement, reduced belt deflection, and extended belt life. Naturally, the question arises: can this be retrofitted onto earlier Ridge models? According to Kawasaki engineers, while technically possible, it also requires changing the clutch, clutch weight changes, and other upgrades that make it impractical.

STYLING INSIDE and OUT

Kawasaki nailed the Ridge’s styling, blending ruggedness with refinement. But it’s the robust protection that truly impresses. Remember those cringe-worthy videos of logs puncturing flimsy cabs, with nothing but a thin piece of plastic between you and the wrong end of a sharp stick?  Ride easier with a Ridge.  Full underbody armor and steel wheel-well liners offer serious peace of mind.  The smooth body lines, tight panel gaps, and substantial doors reinforce this sense of security. And the XR CREW models? They take it up a notch with upgraded bumpers and extra LED lighting, adding both style and an extra layer of defense.

The attention to detail continues inside with comfortable seats, an intuitive dash layout, ample storage, and a beautiful, full-color digital display behind the steering wheel. Stepping up to the XR CREW adds a center-mounted GARMIN display, putting enough information at your fingertips the Ridge should probably come equipped with wings.

Since extra seating is the name of the game with the RIDGE CREW, the rear passengers are treated to comfy bucket seats for two, or a sculpted bench seat for three. Plus, Kawasaki included a cool trim panel behind the front seats, saving your knees from any hard edges. You also get power outlets and a fold-out cupholder in a center console.  We particularly like the strategically placed hand holds on the outboard cab center pillars, making entry and exit easy. And unlike some competitors, the rear doors open forward without any awkward collisions with the front doors.  Overall, the cab’s layout is exceptionally well-done.

MOUNTAIN TIME – THE TRAILS OF MONTANA

From the grassy bottomland to the snow-covered mountains, Yellowstone country would be an excellent place to put the RIDGE CREW to the test.  This was exactly what it was designed for.

Our first morning in the Ridge XR Crew was a frosty affair.  Overnight snow added to the adventure and would be a challenge at higher elevations.  Our first test was to move a few bales near a good-sized herd of hungry horses.  We piled into the Ridge, eagerly cranked up the heater, and headed for the pasture.  The full HVAC system was a very welcome feature on this day!

The RIDGE CREW’s engine responds with a lively burst of RPMs, demanding a touch more throttle to get going. More than once, we glanced at the display to make sure we were in High gear and not Low, but as speed picks up it feels very natural. The 4-cylinder engine gives a quiet rumble, loves to rev, and when underway there is zero vibration thanks to rubber isolation mounts.  Clutch engagement with the new Free Collar clutch design is noticeably smoother, and shifting between gears with the dash mounted lever is always excellent.  Ranch roads and mountain trails became our testing ground, with the power delivery set in Normal mode as our default, and Work or Sport mode engaged for demanding sections.  With snow on the ground, 4WD provided constant, reassuring grip.

The Ridge Crew easily handled the bales we piled into it with a lot less effort than us!  The bales had gotten wet recently and picked up a lot of weight.  Task complete, it was time to switch gears and plow snow away from a gate using Kawasaki’s plow system – a testament to the Ridge Crew’s adaptability and the wide range of Kawasaki accessories.

Snapping the Kawasaki UTV plow into action is a breeze. The permanently mounted bracket makes attachment quick and easy: drive up, guide it onto the winch mount posts, connect the winch lift cable, and get back into the warm cab! The Kawasaki plow pushes through light and even crusty snow, but it’s not really built for heavy dirt work.  The ability to pivot the plow for pushing to either side is a plus, and with some RIDGE CREW models already winch-equipped, it’s a plug-and-play operation.

MOUNTAIN RIDGE ADVENTURE – TRAIL TESTED

How can you see a mountain trail and not want to climb it?  The RIDGE CREW, built for adventure, was more than ready. Kawasaki even subtly hints at its climbing prowess with a mountain Ridge logo etched in the windshield, a cue taken from Jeep, and a clear nod to its off-road pedigree. Clearly, it’s meant to climb, and we eagerly pointed the vehicle skyward.

The deeper snow at higher elevations was no match for the Ridge Crew’s tenacity.  It was up to the challenge with confidence inspiring handling and stability, easily climbing over rocks, small logs, and through twisty turns. Electronic Power Steering and supple suspension made the climb a breeze, with no arm fatigue.  Inside the cab we were very comfortable while outside the Ridge Crew busted through snow, sometimes with the aid of the differential lock as the tires clawed for traction and pushed us skyward.  Steering was precise and locked on course as we gingerly picked our way along a narrow mountain ridge in our Kawasaki Ridge Crew.  And the view from the top?  Spectacular!

Sometimes getting down can be more hazardous than the climb.  Thankfully, engine braking is standard on every model Ridge and it kept everything in check on the sometimes steep and always slippery, snow-covered descent.  The XR CREW’s extra ground clearance and larger tires were a definite advantage on the rough, steep slopes.

THE RIDE FROM THE REAR SEAT

We settled into the Ridge XR Crew’s rear seats for an afternoon, and it was a genuinely enjoyable experience. The panoramic views and generous legroom created a comfortable space. The rear doors are a little smaller than the front doors, but it’s no problem getting in.  We especially like how they close and latch securely. Secure handholds are positioned perfectly.  It’s also easy to have a conversation with the front passengers.  The open area under the front seat provides enormous foot space, but also allows better airflow for the HVAC system.

MAINTENANCE THE KAWASAKI WAY

The RIDGE and RIDGE crew don’t ask much for maintenance, and Kawasaki made it easy.  Details are:

  • Convenient Oil Dipstick & Fill:  The oil dipstick is on top of the engine, and an oversized fill hole minimizes mess.
  • Easy Oil Filter Changes:  The oil filter’s accessible location allows for hassle-free changes without contortions or finger burning.
  • Instant Battery Access:  The battery is behind a side panel for quick access.
  • Under Seat Air Filter: The air filter pops out easily with a panel below the center seat.  NOTE:  Pro Tip – Keep ahold of the air filter cover clips!  If you drop one, only your 5-year-old nephew will be able to reach it from on top of the skid plate.  We’ve done it.  Twice!
